Crofton Mill Pit Remembered
The entry below is a synopsis of our speakers talk on 23rd October 2024.
A very interesting presentation this week by Mr John Whittle entitled "Crofton Mill Pit Remembered ". John started with a brief description about how the Crofton Pit came about and the conditions that the workers had down the pit.
The actual location and the number of seams that where there and a photograph from 1908 was shown, next the potential problems from the size of the coal seam, the pockets of gas (methane and carbon dioxide), the difficulty to keep deep enough so that the pressure of the sea would not break into any of the tunnels which could have flooded the whole mine, and getting the coal back to the pit head in order to transfer the coal into railway waggons.
In the larger tunnels horses were used to take the full tubs along to the pit head. The earth that had to be removed to get to the coal seams was brought to the pit head and deposited into a heap which in larger pits became very large hills.
Since 2021 the Friends of Crofton Mill Field have been dedicated to transforming the former Crofton Heap and adjacent areas and to researching the history of the mine.
Questions followed to conclude another excellent presentation and a very good morning for all our members who thoroughly enjoyed every moment.
